Why are we gathering?

Ku-ring-gai Council is proposing to overturn a previous Council resolution that would have allowed a full examination of the options for Norman Griffiths Oval — including the question of whether natural or synthetic turf is the best option for the community and environment.

But this Extraordinary Council Meeting raises much bigger questions:

• What value does Council place on environmental protection?
  
  
• Is Council genuinely committed to community consultation?
  
  
• Will local democracy be respected?

At the Extraordinary Council Meeting on Monday 21 September, Councillors are being asked to abandon promised community consultation spending almost $24.4 million to the Norman Griffiths Oval project.

Nor will there be any public forum at the Extraordinary Meeting for residents to address Councillors.

So community groups are holding our own community forum outside Council Chambers at 5.15pm.

CRUNCH TIME FOR NORMAN GRIFFITHS OVAL – MONDAY 21ST SEP WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT NOW! At an Extraordinary Meeting at 6.00pm on Monday, Council is being asked to commit $24 million to synthetic turf at Norman Griffiths Oval—while cancelling the community consultation it promised. With no public forum allowed before this crucial meeting, we are holding our own:Arrive 5.15pm for a 5.30pm sharp startOutside Ku-ring-gai Council Chambers, 818 Pacific Hwy, GordonFinishing between 6.00pm and 6.30pmWe will have speakers, signs and media attendance. Come and listen, and bring your family, neighbours and friends. You do not need to speak—we simply need people there. This project began at $3.1 million and has grown to almost $24.4 million. Along the way, it has encountered environmental incidents and design problems, the contractor was terminated, and the original flood-detention design was abandoned. In May, Council paused the project and promised community consultation before committing further funds. Now, following the election of Mayor Kim Wheatley, Councillors Spencer, Smith and Ngai are seeking to proceed with synthetic turf and cancel that consultation. This is despite NSW Capital Expenditure Guidelines requiring community consultation before commitment to a major project—and the Office of Local Government advising Council that continued consultation and reporting are essential. If Council will not give the community a voice for this decision, we will still make sure it is heard.  Come along to the front entrance of Ku-ring-gai Chambers at 5.15pm on Monday and bring your family, neighbours and friends.
